Uncompahgre Peak is the highest of six peaks over 14,000 feet in the San Juan Range of Colorado. It is rated as a "walk up" and considered to be one of the easier fourteeners to climb.
Uncompahgre means "hot water spring" in the Ute Indian language, suggesting volcanic origins. According to GNIS (Geographic Names Information System), the mountain was named after the Uncompahgre River.
