44,000 Confederate soldiers, led by General Albert S. Johnston took Major General Ulysses S. Grant's forces by surprise in early April of 1862. Thirteen hours of bloodshed on April 6 included the death of General Johnston. Grant was reinforced that night with the arrival of the Army of the Ohio, and a brutal counter-attack on April 7 prevented a possible shift of power to the Confederacy.
