Mount Elbert has the distinction of being the highest peak of the Colorado "14ers" (peaks over 14,000 feet) and second only to Mount Whitney in the contiguous 48 states. While the trail to its summit is long, it is accessible to the average hiker. It and neighboring Mount Massive (14,421 feet) are in the vicinity of Leadville, the highest city in the USA The first documented ascent was in 1874 by a member of the Hayden Survey, H.W. Stuckle.
