Alan Silverstein and party placed a bronze plaque at the summit on July 19, 1987, bearing the following inscription: CHALLENGER POINT 14,080+ Feet In Memory of the Crew of Shuttle Challenger Seven who died accepting the risk, expanding Mankind's horizons January 28, 1986 Ad Astra Per Aspera* *Translated: To the stars through adversity."
