This 1858 historical, antique map of Hispaniola, also known as Santo Domingo, is an island in the Caribbean archipelago, the Greater Antilles. Hispaniola is the site of the first permanent European settlement in the Americas, La Navidad founded by Christopher Columbus on his voyages in 1492 and 1493 of what is now a part of the northeastern coast of Haiti, as well as the first permanent city Santo Domingo, the modern-day capital of the Dominican Republic. The colonial terms Saint-Domingue and Santo Domingo are sometimes still applied to the whole island.
