This year’s Oscars, the 93rd Academy Awards, will take place on Sunday, April 25, after being postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. The eligibility period for films to be nominated was also extended, from December 31, 2020 to February 28, 2021. Honestly, no one really expected this year’s Oscars to be anything—can you name more than three movies that came out this year? I can’t—but, this year’s nominations have been praised as the most diverse in the awards’ history.
Chloé Zhao is expected to win best director for Nomadland—she’s the first Chinese woman and the first woman of color to be nominated. Only five women have been nominated for best director in Oscar history, and only one, Kathryn Bigelow for Hurt Locker in 2010, has ever won it. The nominees for Actor in a Leading Role category are also the most diverse they have ever been.
For this year’s Oscars, we made a map of the locations where the films nominated for the Best Picture award take place. Eight films are nominated, including Nomadland, starring Frances McDormand, Promising Young Woman starring Carey Mulligan, and The Trial of the Chicago 7, starring Sacha Baron Cohen.
